At a recent press conference, director, writer Christopher Nolan revealed how author Charles Dickens' 1859 classic novel "A Tale Of Two Cities" influenced "The Dark Knight Rises" screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan.
"When I did my draft on the script," said Nolan, "it was all about 'A Tale of Two Cities'.
"'A Tale of Two Cities' was, to me, one of the most harrowing portraits of a relatable, recognizable civilization that completely folded to pieces..."
With 'resurrection' the dominant theme of "A Tale of Two Cities", set during the French Revolution, the story follows a virtuous former French aristocrat who falls victim to the revolution and an alcoholic British barrister who redeems his ill-spent life with martyrdom.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair..."
